Robert was on a mission over the
Italian coast when he or his flight
leader spotted an enemy minelayer
South west of Elbe, and orders were
given to drop fuel tanks and attack
the ship. Tragically, when Robert
jettisoned his belly tank, it hit the
under side of tail of his spitfire and
knocked off the entire tail section,
sending his spitfire spinning into the
sea. His remains were never
